I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned it, but we had our bedrooms renovated this summer. (Please read this as sarcasm. It’s sarcasm. I said it in my best Alexis Schitt voice.)
Since the beginning of July, our space has been disorganized and dysregulated. We’ve all be feeling the effects of having a house upheaved, but now that our bedrooms are done, we’re at least getting better sleep in our beautiful new spaces. It’s still been a process, though, to reset the rest of the home that housed *the stuff* while the bedrooms were being done.
I’m not a religious person after being raised Catholic and rightfully having qualms with religion (16 years of Catholic School, represent!) but I am a very spiritual person and I’ve always felt very connected to the energy of my house. Lately it’s been feeling off and harder to connect to. I was advised by a reading I had done recently to cleanse my house promptly because it’s holding stagnant energy and I was like, “Say no more, mon amour! I’m on it!”
But I’ve never done any cleansing rituals before, so I reached out to my sister for some guidance and did a bit of research online. I cherry picked what felt best and needed for me, the family, and the house, and set myself up for a week of cleansing rituals. I gathered all the tools on the dining room table as a centerpiece for the week. I think the house does feel better, spiritually and physically and I’ve also made big progress on the office which is the last room holding all the boxes to go through. Everything is feeling more settled.
Join me as I go through my cleansing rituals and please share if you have a cleansing ritual you do for your house or space!
Ladies, let’s clean house. 🧹
Monday
Sight - Flame
I chose to focus on the five senses as my guiding point in these rituals. Most of my research said you can use light, smoke, sound, or sweeping to touch each corner and clear the space and I was like lettttt’s do it all!
I associated candle light with the sense of sight. This one was my favorite and I felt it to be the most impactful for the energy in the house. I used a candle the priest who married us used to bless the house when we first moved in. I also gave Fran an unlit red candle to carry around and participate as well. I read that another helpful cleansing technique is to dance and laugh, especially with children, so I set Fran upon that task. Ask me how many times I’ve listened to the Frozen soundtrack this week. Ask me. (It’s 20.)
First, we opened all the windows. Then we started at the front door and went through each room clockwise, shining the light into the corners while I repeated this mantra:
Only entities and energies actively supporting the highest good of all who live in this home may be here. All others must go now to where they belong.
Thanks to my sister for that helpful wording. Then I additionally added:
I fortify this home against any entities or energies that are shed or left behind by visitors.
I also played My Sweet Lord by George Harrison on loop during the process, because that song played at our weddddding and I was holding a candle of the priest who marrrrried us and it was our 11th anniversary Satuuuurday so I thought it would be fiiiiitting. You know!
When we were done, I lit Fran’s flame and let it burn through.
Tuesday
Sound - Drum
This one was probably my least favorite, which surprised me, cause I love the sound of Fran’s metal drum. But I think Maggie (dog) and Fran (child) both found it unsettling to listen to me play randomly as I walked through the house saying the mantra.
Because I already felt the entity/energy work was done well with the candle, I now added affirmations that this house was a place of love, laughter, and connection. Oh, and Fran had a maraca. The feeling I got was a sense of vibrations moving through the house, acting like a stretch.
Wednesday
Smell - Smoke
I don’t burn incense or anything generally, so I wanted to find a smoke that would be meaningful for me. My dad would burn frankincense when I was growing up and Steve and I both loved that smell (from growing up Catholic), so I borrowed a pinch from my dad and did my best figuring out how to safely light it. I carried it through the house, said the mantra, and got the feeling that warmth was pulsing through the house. I very much liked doing this one cause you could see the smoke and the house smelled great for a while.
Thursday
Touch - Sweeping
I went through the house this time brushing each corner and saying the mantra. I didn’t get a ton out of this one but that’s okay! I covered my bases and gave it a try.
Friday
Taste - Water
For the last ritual, I took water I have from St. Brigid’s well in Ireland and dipped eucalyptus in it, focusing now on what our home is for and full of (love, connection, abundance, passion, motivation, creativity, etc.). I got the sensation something was being woven/braided in the walls.
After, I put fresh flowers in each room and everything felt really clean and wonderful.
One thing I loved about these rituals is that I tidied the house before each one, so then when I was done I was like Ohhh, what a clean house. It wasn’t a big clean - just a gathering of all the dishes in soapy water, picking things off the floor, folding the blankets - an intentional focus on the space.
Our house feels so much better and I’m really excited to get everything fully settled. Since the reno started, I’ve noticed how hard it is to make any kind of art. Art requires time, space, and energy and I am constantly plagued by “If you have time to lean, you have time to clean” when it comes to going through boxes and getting settled again. But the office is nearly there and when it is, I’m hopeful art will be plentiful and flow.
I’d love to know what art you’ve created in the last week or just how your weekend has been!
Much love and feeling lighter,
Bríg
We are BIG TIME due for a home cleansing! Our renovation + my hubby's scary movie phase are making things wonky AF. Oh, maybe my mood, too... 😉 Thank you for these great ideas!
I love that you did all that. It's giving me ideas.... I have a great connection to my house, we're very good pals. But it's also been an active (and not so active, but still open) renovation for more than six years now. I've moved some stuff forward this summer, but all in all it's been very slow going. So now I'm thinking: off course it's been slow. I've been wadng through all these past iterations of the house. I think I need to clean out all that it has been to make space to move onwards to who it's becoming. THANK YOU for that impulse!
